My preference is the mega drive. I prefer it sound while I do like this Nintendo it’s audio hasn’t aged nearly as well as the mega drives in my opinion and I’m talking about Japanese developed games pacifically that aged very well for the mega drive.

StarFox Adventures would be among those games on the list that pushed the Nintendo GameCube to it's visual limits.

Another game worth mentioning in terms of pushing the limits of the GameCube is Rareware's swansong for home console games for Nintendo, Star Fox Adventures. That game is graphically gorgeous with fantastic visual effects, from reflections on polished stone surfaces to fur-bearing characters having detailed hair strands that react to momentum and wind, to its rain, snow, fire, water, and depth of field effects, all running at 60 FPS and stream-loading level and entity asset data from the disc without any loading pauses or hiccups.

I do get the impression that GameCube is a massive upgrade in terms of graphics compared to Nintendo 64. I wonder what the graphics will be like if it is somewhere between Nintendo 64 and GAmeCube? Surely we could have just a fewest amounts of polygons like in Nintendo 64 but have the best graphics from the likes of GameCube, right? And by the way, I did took Wind Waker for granted. I never thought this game could push the limits of what GameCube could do.

I've owned Crisis Force for over a decade now and from day one when I grabbed it, being well up on the library of other hardware, I've always felt it was something I should be playing on a Turbo Duo/PC Engine I had, that it shouldn't even work on the NES/Famicom but there it is, and it doesn't struggle for it either. I would think on a technical level Konami's VRC chipped stuff, more like Salamander, Akamajou Densetsu, and Lagrange Point deserve a piece, maybe a stand alone Konami did what feature on the FC side of things. Overseas and a failed NTSC release but ELITE is insane, that really shouldn't work. A game like Space Harrier and Tetrastar do some pretty unique visuals as well and fast. NES side there would be an easy nod to Castlevania III to side by side that, but also Super Spy Hunter.

Maybe it can compete against early NES, I mean, Zelda looked scheisse, so did Duckhunt/Mario World. But after 1989, the NES programmers made it into a total different class of game console, often beating the 16 bit SNES in house. With games like Power Blade, Kabuki Quantum Fighter, Felix the Cat and such, the C64 feels a decade too old.

I'm listening to you talk about how good F-Zero GX looks, meanwhile the video on screen looks nothing like F-Zero GX and there's low bitrate compression artifacts everywhere. Try pausing the video, it looks absolutely cheap and horrendous. Whoever is watching this will get the impression that F-Zero GX looks much worse than it actually does. If you upload in 1080p you get low bitrate imposed on the video. That's why you need to upload stuff like this in 4K or a bare minimum 1440p60 so you can use higher bitrate. I had to stop the video cause its hurting my eyes to look at this.

Gamecube had access to some pretty great Directx 8.1esque features. Rogue Leader aside I wouldn't say these choices pushed the limits...they just took good advantage of the hardware.

NFS Carbon wasnt by any means an impressive game on GCN. All NFS games on cube were quickports and do not take full advantage of Nintendo 128 hardware. Even PS2 versions look better, sadly. Also you stated there was no sandbox games like GTA on GCN and this was the most look a like, and you forget True Crime LA and NY are available for GCN...sadly those are Quickports too, but at least are better to nothing.

In retrospect it's pretty neat that Nintendo handhelds were so underpowered, they feel like extensions of older generations (GBA was a throwback to 16 bit era, DS=extention of PS1/N64, etc). Meanwhile PSP and Vita just feel like 6th and 7th gen games turned down to "low" settings.

As a game designer who worked on commodore 64 and amiga games in the 80s and 90s I can safely say none of these games especially shadow of the beast pushed the limits or hardware of the amiga..except street fighter but the wrong people weren't talented enough to make it work and it was released a mess by greedy publishers who wouldn't at the time pay for a talented company who would of nailed it

always found the Nes to be very bland even when compared to the C64's pale colours. Some great games on the Nes of course but I never saw it as an upgrade. The Master System did at least look like it was but I stuck with the C64. The Nes and Master System both had that per line limit making for some horrible disappearing graphics too so they never appealed to me. Decent systems though with some very compelling games
